Evidence-Based Therapies

Evidence-based therapies are used because they are grounded in research and have been shown to be effective in helping people reduce symptoms, build coping skills, and create meaningful change. These approaches rely on methods that have been studied across diverse populations, allowing treatment to be both intentional and responsive rather than based on guesswork. Using evidence-based practices helps ensure therapy is ethical, collaborative, and tailored to each client’s goals—providing tools that are proven to support healing, resilience, and long-term well-being.

Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy

Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy is an evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD that helps individuals gradually and safely confront trauma-related memories, feelings, and situations they may have been avoiding. Through guided exposure, clients learn that these experiences, while uncomfortable, are not dangerous and can be tolerated. Over time, this process reduces trauma-related distress, decreases avoidance, and helps individuals regain a sense of control and confidence in their daily lives. PE is structured, collaborative, and paced to support healing while prioritizing safety and empowerment.

Additional exposure therapies include:

  • Prolonged Grief Therapy (PGT)

  • Co-Occurring PE (COPE) for PTSD and Substance use

  • General exposure therapy for anxiety and phobias

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based, trauma-focused treatment designed to help individuals recover from PTSD and trauma-related distress. CPT focuses on identifying and challenging unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma—such as thoughts about safety, trust, control, self-worth, or blame—that may be keeping someone stuck. Through structured, collaborative work, clients learn to develop more balanced and compassionate ways of understanding their experiences, which can reduce symptoms, improve emotional regulation, and support long-term healing and resilience.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an evidence-based treatment most commonly used for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). ERP helps individuals gradually face feared thoughts, images, or situations (exposure) while learning to resist compulsive behaviors or mental rituals (response prevention). Over time, this process reduces anxiety, weakens the cycle of obsessions and compulsions, and builds confidence in tolerating uncertainty. ERP is structured, collaborative, and paced to support lasting symptom relief and increased daily functioning.
